The Madurai Kamaraj, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Mother Teresa and Alagappa University Teachers' Association (MUTA) has urged the State Government to ensure decent salary, job security, and other facilities to the faculty members working in self-financing colleges. A resolution to this effect was adopted in the MUTA's conference that ended in Palayamkottai on Sunday. The conference said the Tamil Nadu Government should give salary grant to teachers working in self-financing colleges and in self-financing courses besides extending other facilities like provident fund, ESI, maternity leave, medical leave.

Fill vacancies

All existing vacancies in the colleges should be filled up.

As recommended by the Centre and the University Grants Commission, house rent allowance, daily allowance, education allowance, travelling allowance should be given to college teachers and salary arrears should be given in one instalment.

Teachers who have put in 20 years of service should be made eligible for getting full pension, they insisted.

While the retirement age for college teachers should be increased to 65, the government should do away with the contributory pension scheme and instead, the scheme, which was in practice before April 1, 2003 should be revived.

All colleges being run by Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Madurai Kamaraj University and Mother Teresa University should be converted into government colleges and timescale should be given to faculty members working in these colleges.

On its part, the Centre should allocate six per cent of the GDP for education and the bill favouring the foreign educational institutions to have their branches in the country should be withdrawn without any hesitation.
