Take appropriate action for sanctioning the increased strength in Colleges - MUTA Demands University authorities

PRESS RELEASE

MUTA welcomes the decision of the Secretary for Higher Education in stalling the steps taken by the Madurai Kamaraj University authorities to increase the strength of various degree courses in this academic year. In their hastiness to sanction such increased strength, they have failed to consult even the convener of the Conveners of the Committee of MKU, namely the secretary for Higher Education. Self financing Colleges in Tamilnadu are exploiting this heavy rush for admission into degree courses. University authorities have also readily complied with their request and they have sanctioned increased strength across the counter without verifying the actual need for the increase and monitoring the infrastructure requirements in the college. Education Secretary Dr.Kannan has intervened at the right time and checked the decision taken by the university authorities to sanction increased strength in a hotch-potch manner. On the other hand, MUTA views that this demand for higher education in arts and science colleges is a welcome trend. At the same time caution must be taken to accommodate these aspirants in a judicious manner.

Hence, MUTA urges the Education Secretary and the University Authorities to study the present situation carefully and take appropriate action for sanctioning the increased strength.  Before sanctioning the increased strength, the university should monitor the infrastructure required for the increased seats in the college. MUTA requests the University authorities to ensure the implementation of reservation policy for the increased strength also. It is also urged that the merit list must be considered while making admissions.  The increase in strength should not be unwieldy and cause strain to the teachers. MUTA requests the Government to take stringent action against the managements who violate norms for admissions and collect extra fees.
