MUTA-AUT-TANTSAC members in the fast

 As part of the campaign against conversion of PSG group of educational institutions at Coimbatore and Thiagarajar Group of educational institutions at Madurai into private unitary universities, the MUTA, AUT and TANTSAC has jointly organized a massive Fast Programme at Chennai on 12-12-2010. The Fast Programme has started with the vibrant, militant and poetic slogans raised by veteran Prof.Ramamoorthi of AUT. The Fast Programme has been presided by a Presidium of the three organizations represented by their presidents Prof.M.Anandakrisnan (MUTA), Dr.P.Jayagandhi (AUT) and Mr. Manoharan (TANTSAC). 
Mr.Thalavai Sundaram, former AIADMK Minister, in his inaugural address has spoken against the conversion of aided colleges into private unitary universities which will lead to commercialisation of higher education and hence higher education will become inaccessible to poor students. He assured that the AIADMK will support this struggle to withdraw the two bills seeking conversion of colleges into unitary universities.
Dr. P.Jayagandhi, in his presidential address, traced the developments since May 2008 and the necessity of this struggle to push back the sinister move of the Government of Tamilnadu to go ahead with the conduct of Select Committee meeting of the Tamilnadu Legislative Assembly with an agenda to covert these colleges into unitary universities. Prof. M.Ananthakrishnan has spoken critically of the developments in the field of higher education and the nonchalant attitude of the Government of Tamilnadu. Mr.Manoharan has expressed solidarity to the movement.
Mr.T.K.Rengarajan,M.P and Central Committee member of the CPI(M) has explained how the central and state governments are pursuing the anti-people, anti-student neo-liberal education policies. He has also exhorted the participants to go to every nook and corner of the state and explain the disastrous education policies of both the central and state governments. He has further stated that the Centre of Indian Trade Unions will extend all possible help to the teachers and employees in their campaign.
Prof.Thirugnansambandam, President, AUT Unit, PSG Arts College, Dr.Vanathi, Secretary, AUT Unit PSG TECH, Prof.Joseph Sugunaseelan, President, MUTA Unit, Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Dr.Petchimuthu and Dr.R.Krishnakumar (Secretary Elect) of Thiagarajar Arts College have shared their experiences in building the movement against heavy odds in their colleges.     
 Prof.S.Vivekanandan, General Secretary, MUTA, Prof.P.Ramamoorthi(AUT), Mr.Chandrasekaran (Former TANTSAC President), Mr.R.Stephen Raj, General Secretary,TANTSAC are the other speakers. Prof.Regunathan  (Former AUT President) in his concluding remarks stated that the struggle against unitary universities is a class struggle and the teachers and employees must be prepared to wage a long drawn struggle against the anti-people policies in the field of higher education shedding our pseudo prestige. More than 1000 teachers and employees including 250 women teachers have participated in the programme which is the largest ever programme organized in the recent days.
